My journey with clay began on my father’s brickyard before I could walk. It continued throughout school, and into a major in ceramics at university. I have operated a ceramics studio for over twenty years and moved through many ranges and expressions.
This range is a return to love. In honoring the layers and edges, the integral and unexpected, the true beauty and nature of clay is epitomized
Loreta Makamanzi and I have worked together since 2012 and she is now our studio manager. Gina Makamanzi joined us in 2017. These beautiful Zimbabwean sisters have a natural sensitivity towards clay, essential when creating organically from plastic clay and not slip casting en masse.
This range has evolved and come to life through custom work done for various chefs in dynamic creative collaboration. Each piece is hand rolled by Loreta and Gina, much like pasta. This process is responsible for the incredible durability of my work, and also preserves the organic essence of the clay and uniqueness of each piece. We then hand finish the edges and surface of each one. In the final stage I hand paint the layers of glaze and after that the magic and mystery of heat takes over.
